Bath Ales Ltd

'Trevor Heynes approached Bath Ales having established contact
through the Bristol Chamber of Commerce. It was an apposite approach
as Bath Ales had undergone a programme of rapid expansion that
had led to the acquisition of more pubs, increased capacity at
the brewery and greater sales. As a result more staff had been
taken on and a number of Personnel issues needed addressing.
Trevor offered his expertise and services in a number of fundamental
key areas. He set out a programme where we could address various
aspects of our business within given modules. These covered areas
such as Terms and Conditions of Employment; Health & Safety Policy
Statements; Equal Opportunities; On-site Risk Assessment Training;
Recruitment Policy; Communications Policy;
The modules took the form of half day discussions to arrive at
an understanding of what was required within the context of the
Bath Ales culture.
Over the course of the last 18 months Bath Ales has adopted and
installed the policies and procedures recommended by Trevor. He
has presented to us the agreed policy statements covering legal
aspects, statutory requirements and the latest changes that need
addressing, enabling us to publish them as required.
Bath Ales has been extremely pleased with what Trevor has been
able to offer us. His professional approach and engaging manner
coupled with his expert understanding of all aspects of the personnel
brief has led to Bath Ales being able to go forward safe in the
knowledge that we are more than comfortable with all our internal
personnel and health & safety policies and procedures. Indeed
we are able to present ourselves, with Trevor's ongoing support,
as a business prepared and ready for the dynamics that being an
employer presents.
Bath Ales would recommend Trevor Heynes to any business that
employs people regardless of size.

‘Universal Components Ltd appointed TH Personnel
Services just over a year ago. Since then Trevor has worked with
us in updating our Contracts of employment and the introduction
of both Staff and Management Handbooks.
This has proven to be a most worthwhile and useful tool especially
in todays ever-changing employment legislation. It enables us
to deal with day to day issues without worrying about making wrong
decisions. Trevor also has the gift of providing information in
simple English!
It has also made us realise the importance of following procedures
and clearly defines them to the workforce. This has been a tremendous
benefit in reducing management time because staff are able to
seek clarification of and answers to personnel issues by reference
to the comprehensive contract of employment and staff handbook.
We also have Trevor on a telephone helpline service, which we
feel essential knowing there is someone available in more delicate
cases or even to bounce things off.

Managing Director
MD Building Services Limited

'We first met Trevor when we joined the Bristol Chamber of Commerce
and were immediately impressed by Trevor’s energy, enthusiasm
and abundant knowledge.
Further meetings with Trevor identified where and what we were
missing in the company to comply with current employment and health
& safety regulations and best practice.
Through Trevor’s advice and direction we have progressed
to a stage where we are now more relaxed and better equipped to
handle important personnel issues...

Updating and issue of Contracts of Employment
and installation of new Staff Handbook
We receive many requests from clients expressing concern
about their vulnerability because of substantially increased
liabilities arising out of recent employment regulations.
Even then we find that they are unaware about the extent
and range of their obligations as employers and the minefield
that exists for the unwary.
A common scenario for many businesses is that they started
with one or two employees and facing rapid expansion have
had neither the time or expertise to develop and install
arrangements for ensuring compliance with employment law,
health & safety regulations and best practice.
Ways we helped them:
- Carrying out audits and review of existing personnel
documentation and procedures
- Preparation and on-site presentation of a written report
outlining deficiencies and including recommended action
plan for compliance with current employment and health
& safety legislation and best management practice
- Preparation of customised personnel and health & safety
policies and procedures;
- Updating and installing written contracts of employment
- Preparation of Staff and Management Handbooks
- Advising and helping client launch amended and/or new
personnel documentation
- Carrying out appropriate staff and management training
The benefits:
- Reduced liability of non-compliance with current employment
regulations
- Improved client awareness about when to initiate action
and ability to implement appropriate personnel procedures
- Improved ability of employer to delegate personnel accountability
to middle management and supervision
- Enhanced employer reputation perceived by staff as a
professional employer of choice
- Improved staff communications and motivation

Health & Safety Risk Assessment Training
We were approached for help by a multi-site employer within
the leisure sector who recognised their vulnerability because
of the lack of formal arrangements for dealing with their
obligations under health & safety regulations.
Ways we helped them:
- Preparing customised Health & Safety Policy and Organisation
Statements as an integral part of a personnel audit programme
- Carrying out on-site staff training to raise awareness
about health & safety and enable staff to carry out health
& safety risk assessments
- Providing health & safety risk assessment training after-care
- Providing support and guidance dealing with inspections
by Enforcing Authorities
The benefits:
- Improved awareness at all levels throughout the business
about employer health & safety obligations
- Developed and installed customised policies and procedures
to achieve compliance with health & safety regulations
- Improved staff awareness about employee health & safety
obligations and responsibilities
- Managing Director now appointed members of management
team as competent persons with responsibility for carrying
out risk assessments
- Improved ability, knowledge and skills of management
team to undertake health & safety issues and staff training

Recruitment & Interview Skills Training
Whilst helping a service sector employer review, update
and install personnel policies and procedures they recognised
the benefits of a systematic and planned approach to managing
people issues. They were about to recruit additional staff
and felt that their previous recruitment efforts had been
on a “seat-of-the-pants” basis and were unsure
how to go about effective recruitment. They were rightly
concerned at the potential and costly disasters arising
from a lack of formal training in recruitment and interview
skills.
Ways we helped them:
- Preparing and installing integrated personnel policies
and procedures covering Recruitment, Equal Opportunities
and Staff Training & Development
- Carrying out on-site recruitment and interview skills
training for nominated recruiters covering planning, questioning
techniques and assessments
- Raising awareness about wide range of non-discriminatory
employment regulations affecting the recruitment process
The benefits:
- Raised awareness about importance of, and achieved commitment
to, systematic, planned and effective approach to staff
recruitment and selection
- Improved confidence and motivation of recruiters to
deal with current recruitment campaign
- Highlighted key strategic and operational issues the
company needed to address as part of the recruitment process
